What is a QR Code?

QR codes encode data in a 2D barcode that phones can scan. Learn how they work and what they store.

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data as a pattern of black and white squares. Invented by Denso Wave in 1994 for tracking automotive parts, QR codes are now universally used for URLs, WiFi credentials, contact information, payments, and more. A QR code can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 7,089 numeric characters. Built-in error correction (Reed-Solomon codes) allows scanning even when 7-30% of the code is damaged or obscured.
